Shukla Ashtami is the 8th lunar day (Tithi) of Shukla Paksha, the bright half of the lunar month. Its epithet is Dawandha Prada, "generates conflict", and its tutelary lord (Adhidevta) is Shiva (lord of destruction - a Hindu Triad).
Counted paksha by paksha, Shukla Ashtami is ruled by Shiva. It belongs to the Nandaadi group of Jaya Tithis, ruled by Mars, and in Shukla Paksha it is called Dharmini. By eye status Shukla Ashtami is a two-eyed Tithi.
Shukla Ashtami becomes a Dagdha Tithi when the Sun is in Taurus. It is Maas Shunya in Chaitra and Falgun.
