How the counting works
Count inclusively, starting from the base house as the first. The 2nd from the 2nd: begin at house 2, count two houses — 2, 3 — and you land on the 3rd. The 7th from the 7th: begin at 7 and count seven — 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 1 — and you return to the 1st.
The whole table follows from one small formula: the Nth from the Nth is always 2N minus 1, wrapped back into the range 1 to 12.

Why it is worth knowing
It explains links between houses that otherwise look arbitrary. The 4th and 10th keep influencing each other because the 7th from the 4th is the 10th, and the 7th from the 10th is the 4th — home and career are structurally opposite, not coincidentally so.
It is also where the Maraka rule comes from. The 8th governs longevity and the 12th from any house negates it, which lands on the 7th; the 3rd is the secondary house of longevity and the 12th from it lands on the 2nd. Those two houses are exactly the ones the texts call Maraka.
How to use it in a reading
Treat the derived house as a second opinion on the first. If you are reading the 5th for children or creativity, the state of the 9th tells you how far that promise extends. It is a tool for understanding why houses behave as they do rather than for timing events — for timing you still need the Dasha.
