Hindu calendar

In Hindu Calendar, the day starts with local sunrise and ends with next day local sunrise. As sunrise time is different for all cities, Hindu Calendar made for one city is not valid for any other city. Hence it is important to use location based Hindu Calendar, like this website. Further, each Hindu day consists of five elements, which are called angas.

  • Tithi
  • Nakshatra
  • Yoga
  • Karan
  • Var (name of seven days of a week)

Panchang

In Hindu Calendar, all five elements together are called Panchang. (In Sanskrit: Panchang = Pancha (five) + Ang (part)). Hence Hindu Calendar which shows all five elements for each day is called Panchang. In South India Panchang is known as Panchangam.

Indian Calendar

When Hindu Calendar includes Muslims, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist and Jain festivals, including national holidays, it is called as Indian Calendar.

A green dot marks an auspicious yoga — 15 of the 28. Which yoga applies on a given day is determined by the combination of that day's weekday and nakshatra.

Tithi, Moon Rashi and Nakshatra are the values prevailing at each day's sunrise — the standard Vedic convention. Where the Rashi or Nakshatra changes again before the next sunrise, its exit time is shown next to it. Festivals are sourced from a separate precomputed festival calendar and may not cover every minor observance (e.g. Anvadhan, Ishti) shown on some other panchang sites.
