Name: named after Ashwini Nakshatra, in which the Full Moon of this month falls

Ashwin opens the Sharad (autumn) Ritu. The rains have withdrawn, the air is clear, and the month divides sharply into two halves: a dark fortnight given to the ancestors and a bright fortnight given to the Goddess.

Pitru Paksha occupies the Krishna Paksha, closing on Sarva Pitru Amavasya — also called Mahalaya Amavasya, the day Durga Puja preparations begin in Bengal. No new undertakings are begun during this fortnight; it is reserved for Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Daan.

The bright fortnight is Sharad Navratri, the larger of the year's two Navratris: nine nights for the nine forms of Durga, closing on Vijayadashami. It is Durga Puja in Bengal, Garba and Dandiya in Gujarat, Golu in Tamil Nadu, Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja in the south, and Ramlila and Ravana Dahan across the north. The month ends on Sharad Purnima, kept with Kheer left out in the moonlight.

Frequently asked questions about Ashwin

The fortnight is held to belong to the ancestors rather than the living — the Pitrs are said to visit their descendants during it, and the household's attention is owed to them. So weddings, house-warmings, vehicle purchases and new ventures are deferred to the Navratri that follows immediately, which is regarded as one of the most auspicious stretches of the year. Note that this is custom rather than a Muhurat prohibition: routine work, treatment and study go on as usual.
