Bhadrapada — Bhado in common usage — is the second month of the Varsha (monsoon) Ritu, when the rains are at their heaviest. It is the densest festival month of the monsoon and holds the largest public celebration of the second half of the year in western India.

Ganesh Chaturthi, on Shukla Chaturthi, opens ten days of installation and worship that close with the immersion on Anant Chaturdashi. In the Amanta reckoning, Krishna Janmashtami falls in this month's dark fortnight — the Purnimanta reckoning files the same night under Shravana.

The month's second half turns to the ancestors. In the Amanta reckoning, Pitru Paksha begins on Bhadrapada Purnima and runs a fortnight to Ashwin Amavasya (Sarva Pitru Amavasya), during which Shraddha and Tarpan are offered on the Tithi corresponding to an ancestor's death.

Frequently asked questions about Bhadrapada

Both — it is the same night, filed differently. Krishna was born on the Ashtami of a dark fortnight. In the Purnimanta reckoning of North India that dark fortnight belongs to Shravana; in the Amanta reckoning of the south and west the same fortnight belongs to Bhadrapada. The Gregorian date is identical either way, so the two traditions celebrate together while naming the month differently.
