About Dagdha Yoga
What is Dagdha Yoga?
Dagdha Yoga (दग्ध योग, literally “burnt yoga”) is a Vaara-Tithi (weekday and lunar day) combination considered inauspicious in the Panchang. When it is in effect, the fruits of actions performed are traditionally believed to be “burnt away” or diminished rather than fully realized — hence the name.
Astronomical Formation
Each weekday has a specific qualifying Tithi assigned to it in classical tables. When the prevailing lunar Tithi at a given moment matches the Tithi assigned to that day's weekday, the window is marked as Dagdha Yoga.
Three Classical Opinions
Panchang scholarship does not fully agree on which exact Tithi qualifies for each weekday, so this calculator offers three recognized opinions side by side, selectable from the dropdown above:
- Standard Opinion: the most commonly cited set of weekday-Tithi pairs.
- Vashishta's Opinion: Sage Vashishta's slightly different set of qualifying Tithis, agreeing with the standard opinion on some weekdays and differing on others.
- Brihaspati's Opinion: Guru Brihaspati's independent set of qualifying Tithis, again overlapping with — but not identical to — the other two.
It is worth noting that a separately-named Nakshatra-based “Dagdha Nakshatra” combination also exists in Panchang tradition, pairing each weekday with a specific Nakshatra rather than a Tithi — a different yoga from the Vaara-Tithi Dagdha Yoga covered on this page.
Practical Considerations
Dagdha Yoga is generally avoided for starting new ventures, travel, marriage-related ceremonies, and other significant undertakings. As opinions vary between scholars, it is common practice to check the standard opinion first and cross-reference Vashishta's and Brihaspati's readings before treating a date as clear, and to also verify local sunrise-based timings for your city.
