What is Do Ghati Muhurat?

A Muhurta is two ghatis — about 48 minutes. The day, from sunrise to sunset, is divided into fifteen equal Muhurtas, and the night, from sunset to the next sunrise, into fifteen more. Because these are equal shares of daylight and darkness rather than fixed clock time, a Muhurta measures exactly two ghatis only at the equinox; through the rest of the year it stretches and shrinks with the season and with your latitude, which is why the table has to be computed for a place and not merely a date.

Divisions and notable Muhurtas

Every Muhurta sits inside a Kaala division. The day runs through Pratah, Sangava, Madhyahna, Aparahna and Sayahna; the night through Pradosha, Ratri, Nishita and Arunodaya. Three Muhurtas are observances in their own right: Abhijit Muhurat, the eighth of the day and traditionally the most auspicious window for beginning work; Vijay Muhurat, the eleventh, associated with victory and decisive action; and Mahanishita Muhurat, the eighth of the night, kept for tantric and Kali worship. The opening and closing pairs of the night mark the Sayan and Pratah Sandhya twilights.
