About Karkacha Yoga
What is Karkacha Yoga?
Karkacha Yoga (कर्कच योग) is a traditional Vaara-Tithi (weekday-lunar day) combination Yoga listed among the cautionary yogas of Muhurat Shastra. “Karkacha” literally means a saw — the cutting tool — and the Yoga carries that same severing, disruptive connotation, making it a period Panchang tradition advises approaching with care rather than one to actively seek out.
Astronomical Formation — The Vaara-Tithi Rule
Karkacha Yoga is a pure Vaara-Tithi combination — it forms purely from the pairing of the weekday and the current Tithi, independent of the Moon's Nakshatra. Each weekday has one specific qualifying Tithi:
- Sunday (Ravivara): Dwadashi Tithi
- Monday (Somavara): Ekadashi Tithi
- Tuesday (Mangalavara): Dashami Tithi
- Wednesday (Budhavara): Navami Tithi
- Thursday (Guruvara): Ashtami Tithi
- Friday (Shukravara): Saptami Tithi
- Saturday (Shanivara): Shashthi Tithi
Since only one Tithi qualifies per weekday, Karkacha Yoga returns roughly once each lunar month whenever that specific pairing occurs.
Why It Is Considered Inauspicious
With its “cutting” symbolism, Karkacha Yoga is traditionally held to work against continuity and stability — qualities essential for ventures meant to endure. Muhurat texts generally recommend avoiding weddings, Griha Pravesha, foundation-laying, signing long-term agreements, or launching new business ventures during this window, treating it in the same cautionary category as Kulika and Hutashan Yoga.
Important Considerations
Each Karkacha Yoga window runs continuously through the qualifying Tithi and is displayed split at local sunrise, matching Panchang convention. Because exact Tithi boundaries vary with your location, always check the precise start and end times shown above for your city, and consider any other yogas or muhurats active the same day before finalizing important plans.
