Shravana — Sawan in common usage — is the first month of the Varsha (monsoon) Ritu and the month most closely identified with Shiva. The Samudra Manthan is placed in it: Shiva drank the Halahala poison to save creation, and the water poured over the Shivalinga through this month is offered in memory of the cooling of his throat.

Its defining observance is the Sawan Somwar Vrat, kept on each Monday of the month — Monday being Shiva's own weekday. Unmarried women keep the Mangala Gauri Vrat on Tuesdays for the same reason. Millions of Kanwariyas walk to the Ganga and carry its water back to their local Shiva temples through the month.

Shravana Purnima carries Raksha Bandhan, and with it Upakarma — the annual changing of the sacred thread. In the Purnimanta reckoning of North India, Krishna Janmashtami also falls in Shravana, on Krishna Ashtami; the Amanta reckoning files that same night under Bhadrapada.

Frequently asked questions about Shravana

The Puranas place the churning of the ocean in Shravana. The Halahala poison that surfaced first would have destroyed creation, and Shiva drank it, holding it in his throat — which turned blue, giving him the name Neelkanth. The Devas poured Ganga water over him to cool the burning. Pouring water over the Shivalinga through Shravana repeats that act, and it is why the month's central offering is water rather than fire or food.
