About the month of Ashadha
Name: named after the Ashadha Nakshatras, in which the Full Moon of this month falls
Ashadha closes the Grishma (summer) Ritu and carries the arrival of the monsoon over most of India. It is the month of transition — the last of the dry heat, the first of the rains — and its observances mark the shift from outward activity to inward discipline.
Devshayani Ekadashi, on Shukla Ekadashi, is its pivot. Vishnu is held to enter Yoga Nidra on this day, beginning Chaturmas, the four months of the rains in which weddings, sacred-thread ceremonies, house-warmings and other auspicious beginnings are set aside. The same period is the Varshavasa of the Jain and Buddhist monastic traditions, when wandering ascetics settle in one place for the rains.
Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya is the Jagannath Rath Yatra at Puri, and Ashadha Purnima is Guru Purnima, kept as the birth of Veda Vyasa and as the day disciples honour their teachers — also observed by Buddhists as Dharma Chakra Pravartana, the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath.

Frequently asked questions about Ashadha
Chaturmas is the four-month stretch from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Devutthana Ekadashi in Kartika, covering the monsoon. Vishnu is held to sleep through it, so auspicious beginnings — weddings, sacred-thread ceremonies, house-warmings, new ventures — are deferred. The practical root is older than the theology: the rains made travel impossible, so ascetics stopped wandering and householders stayed put, turning the season into one of study, fasting and recitation rather than movement.
