Kartika is the second month of the Sharad (autumn) Ritu and the most festival-dense month of the Hindu year. The Skanda Purana devotes an entire Mahatmya to it, ranking it with Vaisakha and Magha among the most meritorious months for bathing, lamp-lighting and charity.

Its dark fortnight carries the Diwali sequence — Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Its bright fortnight carries Chhath on Shashthi, Devutthana Ekadashi, which wakes Vishnu and closes Chaturmas, and Tulsi Vivah immediately after, which reopens the wedding season.

Kartika Purnima closes the month with Dev Deepawali at Varanasi, the Kartik Snan bathing that many keep daily through the month, and Guru Nanak Jayanti. It is also observed as Tripurari Purnima, marking Shiva's destruction of the three cities of Tripurasura.

Frequently asked questions about Kartika

Because Chaturmas ends there. Vishnu is held to wake from Yoga Nidra on Kartika Shukla Ekadashi, and the four-month pause on Sanskaras lifts with it. Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi plant to Shaligram, is performed on the following day and is treated as the season's first wedding — after which the almanacs list Vivah Muhurats again, usually through to mid-December when the Sun enters Sagittarius.
