Vaisakha is the second month of the lunar year and the second of the Vasanta (spring) Ritu, running through the hottest part of spring into early summer. It is one of the four months the Puranas single out as especially meritorious, alongside Kartika, Magha and Shravana.

The month is closely associated with water — with giving it away rather than merely drinking it. Vaisakha Snana, bathing at dawn in a river or tank through the month, and the setting up of piaus (public water stalls), fruit and shade for travellers are its characteristic acts of merit.

Vaisakha Shukla Tritiya is Akshaya Tritiya, one of the three and a half Muhurats of the year that need no further calculation — any hour of it is held auspicious for beginnings. The month also carries Buddha Purnima, kept as the birth, enlightenment and Parinirvana of the Buddha on the same Full Moon.

Frequently asked questions about Vaisakha

"Akshaya" means undiminishing. The tradition holds that whatever is begun, given or acquired on this Tithi does not decay, and the day is counted among the three and a half Abujha (self-evident) Muhurats — along with Gudi Padwa, Vijayadashami and the half-Muhurat of Bali Pratipada — for which no separate Muhurat calculation is required. That said, most families still check the Panchang for Rahu Kaal and avoid it even on this day.
