Name: named after Chitra Nakshatra, in which the Full Moon of this month falls

Chaitra is the first month of the Hindu lunar year in the Vikram Samvat and Shaka reckonings, and its first day — Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — is the New Year across much of India, kept as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Cheti Chand among Sindhis and Navreh in Kashmir. The Shaka era used by the Indian national calendar also begins here.

The month opens the Vasanta (spring) Ritu. It sits at the vernal equinox, when day and night are close to equal and the agricultural year turns over — one classical reason the year was set to start here rather than at a solstice.

Chaitra carries the first of the year's two principal Navratris. Chaitra Navratri runs from Shukla Pratipada to Navami and closes on Rama Navami, the birth of Rama, making the month's bright fortnight one of the densest stretches of observance in the calendar.

Frequently asked questions about Chaitra

Two reasons are given in the classical texts. Astronomically, Chaitra Shukla Pratipada falls near the vernal equinox, the natural turning point of the solar year. Ritually, the Brahma Purana holds that creation itself began on this day, which is why the Vikram Samvat and the Shaka era both count from it. Not every region agrees, though — Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab, Bengal, Assam and Odisha begin their year in Vaisakha instead, with the solar new year.
