About the month of Phalguna
Name: named after the Phalguni Nakshatras, in which the Full Moon of this month falls
Phalguna is the last month of the lunar year and the second of the Shishira (winter) Ritu, carrying the turn from winter into spring. It ends the year on its noisiest note: the Full Moon of Phalguna is Holika Dahan, and the following morning is Holi.
The month's other great observance sits at the opposite pole. Maha Shivaratri, on the Chaturdashi of the dark fortnight in the Purnimanta reckoning, is kept awake through the night in four watches of worship, with fasting and continuous Abhishek of the Shivalinga — the year's most widely observed night vigil.
Between them the month carries Amalaki Ekadashi, on which the Amla tree is worshipped as the seat of Vishnu, and Phalguna Purnima itself, which in the Gaudiya tradition is Gaura Purnima, the appearance day of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Frequently asked questions about Phalguna
The bonfire must be lit during Pradosh Kaal — the period just after sunset — on the day the Purnima Tithi is current, and it must avoid Bhadra. Bhadra is the shadow of the Vishti Karan, held inauspicious for beginnings, and it frequently overlaps the early part of Holika Purnima. Almanacs therefore publish an exact Holika Dahan Muhurat each year, which can fall late at night when Bhadra runs long.
