Name: named after Magha Nakshatra, in which the Full Moon of this month falls

Magha opens the Shishira (winter) Ritu and is, with Vaisakha and Kartika, one of the three months the Puranas single out for bathing. Magh Snan — a dawn bath in a river, ideally at a confluence, kept every day of the month — is its defining act, and the Magha Mahatmya of the Padma Purana is read alongside it.

The month contains the largest religious gatherings in the world. The Magha Mela at Prayagraj runs through it, becoming the Kumbh or Maha Kumbh in the appointed years, with Mauni Amavasya as its most heavily attended bathing day — kept in silence, hence the name.

Its bright fortnight turns toward learning and the Sun: Vasant Panchami on Shukla Panchami for Saraswati and the first stirrings of spring, and Ratha Saptami on Shukla Saptami, the Sun's symbolic turn northward on his seven-horsed chariot. In the Amanta reckoning, Maha Shivaratri falls in this month's dark fortnight.

Frequently asked questions about Magha

The Padma Purana's Magha Mahatmya holds that the merit of bathing at a Tirtha is at its highest in this month, and that a dawn bath in any river during Magha carries the merit of one at Prayag. The practical layer is that this is the coldest month, so a pre-dawn bath is an austerity in itself — the merit is understood to lie in keeping it daily through the whole month rather than in one visit.
