Name: better known as Bhadra — the single Karan classically avoided

Vishti, almost always called Bhadra in practice, is the seventh movable Karan and the one exception among the movable group: it is the single Karan that classical Muhurta consistently tells you to avoid. Its presiding deity is Yama, and it occurs eight times in every lunar month like the other movable Karans.

During Bhadra, auspicious undertakings — marriage, Griha Pravesh, starting a business, beginning a journey — are traditionally postponed. The prohibition is taken seriously enough that printed Panchangs mark Bhadra periods explicitly, and Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan observances are routinely timed to fall outside it.

The tradition does allow certain acts during Bhadra rather than treating it as wholly inert: it is considered acceptable for surgery and medical intervention, for legal disputes, and for work requiring confrontation — matters where its harsh character is regarded as suitable rather than obstructive.

Suitable during this Karan

  • Surgery and medical procedures
  • Litigation and confronting disputes
  • Acts requiring firmness or removal

Traditionally avoided

  • Marriage and engagement
  • Griha Pravesh
  • Starting a business or new venture
  • Beginning a journey
  • Auspicious ceremonies generally

Frequently asked questions about Vishti Karan

They are the same thing. Vishti is the formal name of the seventh movable Karan; Bhadra is the name used almost universally in practice and in printed Panchangs. When an almanac says "Bhadra" it is marking a Vishti Karan period.
