About Akal Bodhon

Akal Bodhon is the ritual awakening of Goddess Durga, observed on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin. In Assam, it marks the beginning of the grand Durga Puja celebrations and symbolizes the invocation of the goddess's divine energy.

During Akal Bodhon, households clean their puja rooms and set up the altar for Goddess Durga. The priest performs the Kalparambha ritual, invoking the goddess into the kalash (sacred pot) before the formal puja begins. This ceremony is considered the first formal step of Durga Puja.

Devotees offer special bhog consisting of newly harvested rice, vegetables, and sweets. The evening aarti is performed with great devotion, and the sound of dhak (traditional drums) fills the air, signalling the start of the four-day Durga Puja festivities.
