Buddha Purnima
About Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, falling on the full moon day in the month of Vaishakh. In Assam, where Buddhism has deep historical roots, especially in the Barak Valley and among the Tai-Ahom community, this day is observed with great reverence.
Buddhist monasteries and viharas across Assam are decorated with flowers and colourful flags. Devotees visit monasteries to offer prayers, light incense, and listen to discourses on the Buddha's teachings. The day is marked by meditation sessions and community prayers.
Special processions are taken out in Buddhist-majority areas, and communities organize feasts and charitable activities. The teachings of compassion, non-violence, and mindfulness are emphasized, and many Assamese people, regardless of their faith, participate in the celebrations.
