About Vijayadashami

Vijayadashami, the tenth day of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin, marks the culmination of Durga Puja celebrations in Assam. It is the day of Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

On this day, the Sindoor Khela ceremony is performed, where married women apply vermilion to the goddess's idol and then to each other. The immersion of Durga idols in rivers begins with grand processions of music and dancing.

In Assam, Vijayadashami is also celebrated as the day of Ravana's defeat by Lord Rama. Cultural programmes depicting the Ramayana are organized, and the burning of Ravana effigies marks the victory of righteousness.
