About Bhai Phonta

Bhai Phonta is the Bengali celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters, observed on the second day after Kali Puja (October-November). It is similar to Bhai Dooj celebrated in other parts of India but has its own unique Bengali customs.

On this day, sisters invite their brothers to their homes, perform aarti, and apply a special tilak (phonta) on their brothers' foreheads using a paste made from sandalwood, durba grass, and kumkum.

The sisters pray for their brothers' long life, prosperity, and well-being, while brothers promise to protect their sisters and offer gifts. The ceremony is followed by a grand feast of traditional Bengali cuisine.

Bhai Phonta is one of the most emotionally significant festivals in Bengal, celebrating the unique and irreplaceable bond between siblings with love, gratitude, and mutual respect.
