Kojagari Puja

About Kojagari Puja

Kojagari Puja is performed on the night of Sharad Purnima (full moon in Ashwin month) to worship Goddess Lakshmi. The word 'Kojagari' means 'who is awake,' as it is believed Goddess Lakshmi visits Earth on this night to bless those who are awake.

Devotees stay awake throughout the night, performing puja and singing devotional songs. Rice kheer (payasam) is prepared and left under moonlight, as it is believed the moon's rays on this night have special healing properties.

The puja is especially popular in Bengal and Eastern India, but is also observed in Gujarat with traditional rituals. Homes are decorated and lit with diyas to welcome the Goddess.

Kojagari Puja symbolizes the triumph of devotion and wakefulness over ignorance and sleep, as those who remain awake receive divine blessings.
