About Makara Sankranti

Makara Sankranti, celebrated on January 14th, marks the suns transition into Capricorn and the beginning of Uttarayana (the suns northward journey). It falls on the same date every year.

In Gujarat, this is celebrated as Uttarayan, the kite-flying festival. The skies are filled with colourful kites from dawn to dusk.

Special preparations include til-gul (sesame and jaggery sweets), undhiyu, and jalebi. The exchange of til-gul with Til-gul ghya, god god bola is a cherished tradition.
