About Bhavuka Amavasya
Bhavuka Amavasya is a special New Moon day observed with deep emotional devotion (Bhav) and reverence for one's ancestors (Pitrus). The term 'Bhavuka' refers to one who is full of sentiment, feeling, and devotion, and this Amavasya encourages devotees to perform ancestral rites with heartfelt sincerity. It is particularly significant for performing Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan to ensure peace and liberation for departed souls.
This Amavasya generally falls during the Ashadha or Shravana month, depending on regional calculations, and is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices aimed at pacifying ancestral debts (Pitru Rina). Devotees believe that the departed ancestors visit the earthly realm on this day and bless their descendants when properly honored with offerings, prayers, and charity.
Apart from Pitru rituals, Bhavuka Amavasya is also a day for self-reflection, charity, and devotion to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Many observe partial fasting, visit holy rivers or pilgrimage sites, and donate food, clothes, and essential items to Brahmins and the poor. The emotional intensity of the observance is believed to purify the mind and strengthen the bond between the living and the ancestral realm.
Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules
The day is dedicated to Pitru Tarpan, Shraddha, charity, and devotional prayers performed with deep emotional sincerity.
- Wake early, bathe, and wear clean, preferably white or light-colored, traditional clothes.
- Perform Tarpan at a riverbank, lake, or in your home Puja area using black sesame seeds, barley, Kusha grass, and water.
- Offer Pind Daan (rice balls) and food to Brahmins in the name of deceased ancestors.
- Observe a partial fast, consuming only satvik foods once during the day after the Shraddha rituals are completed.
- Donate clothes, food, utensils, and money to the needy and to priests performing the rituals.
- Recite the Garuda Purana, Vishnu Sahasranama, or Rudrashtakam to bring peace to the departed souls.
Puja Samagri & Ritual Steps
- Purify the Puja area and set up images or symbols of ancestors along with Lord Vishnu.
- Perform Tarpan by offering water mixed with sesame seeds and barley while reciting the names of ancestors.
- Prepare Pindas (rice balls) and offer them to crows, cows, dogs, and Brahmins as representatives of the ancestors.
- Feed Brahmins and donate clothes and essentials in the name of departed souls.
- Conclude with prayers for the peace and liberation of all ancestors.
