Valmiki Jayanti celebrates the appearance of Maharishi Valmiki, the revered sage known as the Adi Kavi (first poet) of Sanskrit literature and the author of the epic Ramayana. His life is a testament to the transformative power of the Divine Name and repentance.
Born as Ratnakara, a highway robber, he was transformed by the sage Narada, who instructed him to chant the name of Rama. Unable at first to utter "Rama," he meditated on "Mara," which itself became the Rama mantra, and after years of penance an anthill (Valmika) grew around him. Thus he became Valmiki.
The day is observed on the full moon of Ashwin month in North India, and also celebrated in Punjab and other regions with processions and recitations of the Ramayana. Devotees visit Valmiki temples, hold Shobha Yatras, and emphasize compassion, truth, and social harmony.
