It honors the devotion of Princess Savitri, who tricked Lord Yama (God of Death) into returning the life of her dead husband, Satyavan.

Women fast, dress in bridal finery, and tie sacred threads around a Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha).
- Circumambulate (perform Parikrama) the Banyan tree 108 times, tying a raw yellow/red cotton thread around its trunk.
