About Bhishmashtami
Bhishmashtami commemorates the birth of Bhishma Deva, the great-grandfather of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata. He was one of the most powerful and virtuous warriors of his time.
Bhishma Deva's vow was extraordinary - he renounced his claim to the throne and vowed never to marry, so that his father could marry Satyavati. This sacrifice earned him the boon of ichha mrityu (death at will).
In ISKCON, Bhishmashtami is observed with fasting, prayers, and readings from the Srimad Bhagavatam, particularly Bhishma Deva's instructions on dharma.
