Ghatasthapana
About Ghatasthapana
Ghatasthapana is the first day of Bada Dashain, falling on the bright fortnight of Ashvin (September-October). It marks the beginning of the nine-night worship of Goddess Durga (Navratri).
On this day, a sacred jar (kalash) is placed on a bed of sand in the puja room, and barley seeds (jamara) are sown. The jamara grows into golden blades used for the tika ceremony on Vijaya Dashami.
The ritual is performed at an auspicious time determined by the panchang, and the kalash is worshipped with prayers and offerings for the next nine days.
Ghatasthapana sets the spiritual foundation for the entire Dashain festival.
