About Baruthini Ekadashi

Baruthini Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the dark fortnight in Kartik month (October-November). The name means 'the protector,' providing divine protection from evil forces. The story involves a devotee protected from Yama by observing this fast.

The Brahma Purana tells of a king named Rupaka who was tormented by a powerful demon. In despair, the king approached Sage Narada, who advised him to observe Varuthini Ekadashi with complete faith. The king followed the sage's instructions, spending the day in fasting and prayer. Lord Vishnu, moved by his devotion, appeared in a divine form and destroyed the demon. The king's kingdom was restored to peace and prosperity, and he ruled wisely for many years. Those who observe this Ekadashi are believed to receive the divine armour (varutha) of Lord Vishnu, protecting them from all evils.

In Odisha, Baruthini Ekadashi is observed with great devotion. Devotees wake before dawn, take a ritual bath, and worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves, sandalwood paste, and fresh fruits. The fast is observed without grains, and the devotee breaks it the next day after offering food to Brahmins. The day is also marked by the recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama and the distribution of prasad to neighbours and the needy.
