About Dasahara

Dasahara, or Dussehra, is celebrated on the tenth day of the bright fortnight in Ashvin month (September-October) in Odisha. It marks Lord Rama's victory over Ravana and the triumph of good over evil.

In Odisha, Dasahara is celebrated with the immersion of Durga idols, completing the Navratri festivities. The day is also significant for Ayudha Puja -- the worship of weapons and implements.

The festival is marked by Ramlila performances -- dramatic reenactments of Lord Rama's life and his battle with Ravana. Community gatherings feature folk dances, music, and cultural programmes.

Dasahara marks the beginning of new ventures and the worship of books, tools, and instruments. It is considered an auspicious time for starting new projects and educational pursuits.
