About Jamai Shashti

Jamai Shashti is celebrated on the sixth day of the bright fortnight in Jyeshtha month (May-June) in Odisha. It honours the bond between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law with elaborate feasts.

On this day, the mother-in-law prepares an elaborate feast for her son-in-law (jamai), who is treated like a king. The jamai is fed the finest delicacies and receives gifts and blessings.

The festival strengthens family bonds and is a time for laughter, stories, and the sharing of traditional Odia cuisine. Families gather from far and wide to celebrate.

Jamai Shashti reflects the Odia tradition of honouring family relationships and the special place sons-in-law hold in the family structure.
