Pankoddhar Ekadashi
About Pankoddhar Ekadashi
Pankoddhar Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the bright fortnight in Phalguna month (February-March). 'Pankoddhar' means 'lifting from the mud,' referring to the Lord's power to lift devotees from worldly existence and grant spiritual liberation.
The Vishnu Purana tells the story of a pious woman named Kamala who was married to a wicked man who despised her devotion. Despite his cruelty, she never wavered in her faith and observed Pankoddhar Ekadashi each year with complete sincerity. One day, the Lord appeared in her vision and told her that her devotion had purified her soul and she would be freed from her earthly suffering. When her mortal life ended, she was carried by celestial beings to Vaikuntha, where she was reunited with the Lord. This story illustrates the promise of this Ekadashi -- that the Lord will lift his devoted servants from the muddy waters of material existence.
In Odisha, Pankoddhar Ekadashi is observed with deep faith in the Lord's protective grace. Devotees fast without grains, perform Vishnu puja with tulsi leaves and flowers, and recite prayers asking for deliverance from worldly troubles. The fast is broken on Dwadashi after offering food to Brahmins. The day is particularly significant for those facing difficult circumstances, as it is believed that the Lord will lift them from their troubles just as he lifts a lotus from the mud.
