Shravana Putrada Ekadashi
About Shravana Putrada Ekadashi
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the bright fortnight in Shravan month (July-August). Like Pausha Putrada, this Ekadashi is observed by couples desiring progeny, seeking the blessings of Lord Vishnu for children.
The Skanda Purana tells of King Dhritirashtra and his queen, who were blessed with a hundred sons after observing Shravana Putrada Ekadashi with complete devotion. The king had been childless for many years and had tried every remedy without success. On the advice of sage Vyasa, he observed this fast with his queen, spending the day in prayer and the night in vigil. Lord Vishnu, moved by their sincerity, blessed them with the gift of a hundred Kaurava princes. This powerful story has made Shravana Putrada Ekadashi especially revered by childless couples across India.
In Odisha, Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is observed with special prayers for the blessing of children. Couples fast without grains, perform Vishnu puja with flowers, fruits, and tulsi leaves, and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama. The fast is broken on Dwadashi after offering food to Brahmins and seeking their blessings. It is also observed by parents who pray for the well-being of their children, and by young people who pray for a virtuous life partner.
