Utpanna Ekadashi
About Utpanna Ekadashi
Utpanna Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the dark fortnight in Kartik month (October-November). 'Utpanna' means 'originated,' as this is when the concept of Ekadashi fasting was first established. The story involves a demon named Muran slain by the personified Ekadashi.
The Brahma Purana narrates the origin of this sacred fast. Lord Vishnu was once besieged by the demon Muran, who had acquired immense power through severe penance. The Lord fought valiantly but could not vanquish Muran. Exhausted, he rested in a cave in the Himalayas. A beautiful woman of divine radiance emerged from his body and volunteered to defeat the demon. She was the personified form of Ekadashi, born on the 11th day of the dark fortnight. With her divine power, she destroyed Muran in an instant. Pleased, Lord Vishnu named the day 'Utpanna' -- the Ekadashi that originated -- and decreed that all who observed fast on this day would be blessed with his protection.
In Odisha, Utpanna Ekadashi is celebrated as the birthday of the Ekadashi fast itself. Devotees observe a strict fast, worship Lord Vishnu with great fervour, and recite the story of Muran's defeat. The fast is broken on Dwadashi after elaborate puja and the distribution of prasad. The day is considered especially auspicious for beginning the practice of Ekadashi fasting, as the merit of this observance is believed to be manifold.
