About Sri Guru Amardas Ji Guru Gaddi Tithi

Guru Gaddi Tithi celebrates the day when Guru Amardas Ji was formally installed as the third Sikh Guru by Guru Angad Dev Ji in 1552. This event continued the tradition of succession through divine appointment and spiritual merit, further establishing the principle that the Guruship was a sacred trust passed from one chosen soul to the next.

Guru Amardas Ji had been a devoted disciple of Guru Angad Dev Ji for many years before being chosen as his successor. His devotion, humility, and tireless service to the community made him the natural choice. The installation as Guru Gaddi was a moment of great spiritual significance, marking the continuation of the divine light that had begun with Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

On Guru Gaddi Tithi, Gurdwaras hold special prayers and kirtan. Devotees reflect on the sacred tradition of succession and the qualities that make a true Guru — devotion, humility, selfless service, and divine appointment. The day is a reminder of the continuity and integrity of the Sikh spiritual tradition.
