About Sri Guru Hargovind Ji Guru Gaddi Tithi
Guru Gaddi Tithi celebrates the day when Guru Hargovind Ji was formally installed as the sixth Sikh Guru following the martyrdom of his father, Guru Arjun Dev Ji, in 1606. This was a pivotal moment in Sikh history, as the new Guru immediately established the dual authority of Miri and Piri, fundamentally transforming the character of the Sikh community.
At the age of eleven, Guru Hargovind Ji received the Guruship and immediately made it clear that the Sikh community would no longer be a passive, defenceless minority. He donned two swords, built the Akal Takht, and maintained a standing army. His installation as Guru marked the beginning of the martial tradition in Sikhism, a tradition that would culminate in the creation of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
On Guru Gaddi Tithi, Gurdwaras hold special prayers and kirtan. Devotees reflect on the transformative moment when the Guruship took on a new dimension — the combination of spiritual and temporal authority that would define Sikhism for centuries to come. The day is a reminder of the divine guidance that directed this fundamental transformation.
