About Sri Guru Hargovind Ji Prakasha Parva Tithi

Prakasha Parva celebrates the birth of Guru Hargovind Ji (1595–1644), the sixth Sikh Guru, who was born in Amritsar. He is known as the 'Master of Miri and Piri' — the one who combined spiritual authority (piri) with temporal power (miri). His era marked a fundamental transformation in Sikhism, as the community adopted a martial tradition to defend itself against Mughal persecution.

Following his father Guru Arjun Dev Ji's martyrdom, Guru Hargovind Ji donned two swords — one representing miri (temporal power) and the other piri (spiritual authority). He built the Akal Takht (Throne of the Timeless One) directly opposite the Harmandir Sahib, establishing the seat of Sikh temporal authority. He maintained a standing army, went on hunting expeditions, and lived in royal grandeur — all to demonstrate that the Sikhs were a community capable of defending themselves and their faith.

On Prakasha Parva, Gurdwaras hold special prayers, Akhand Path, kirtan, and langar. Devotees reflect on Guru Hargovind Ji's revolutionary transformation of Sikhism and his establishment of the Akal Takht. The day is celebrated with devotion and gratitude for the courage and vision that shaped the Sikh community into a fearless, martial spiritual tradition.
