About the Kundli (Birth Chart)

What is a Kundli?

A Kundli (also called Janma Kundali or birth chart) is a map of the twelve houses of the zodiac as they were arranged at the exact date, time, and place of your birth. It plots the Ascendant (Lagna) and the sidereal positions of the Sun, Moon, and the classical planets into houses, giving a snapshot of the sky used as the foundation for nearly all further Vedic astrological analysis — from personality and career to relationship compatibility and life timing (Dasha).

Lagna Chart vs. Chandra Chart

This calculator generates two charts side by side. The Lagna Chart is anchored to your Ascendant, with the rising sign placed in the 1st house — this is the standard chart most references mean when they say “your birth chart.” The Chandra Chart (Moon chart) is the same set of planetary positions re-plotted with your Moon sign placed in the 1st house instead, which some interpretive traditions use as an alternate reference point since the Moon reflects the mind and emotional disposition.

Chart Styles & Divisional (Varga) Charts

You can view your chart in North Indian, South Indian, or East Indian visual styles — these differ only in layout convention (how the twelve houses are drawn on the page); the underlying planetary positions are identical. You can also switch between the main Rashi chart (D-1) and divisional charts (Varga charts) such as Hora (D-2), Drekkana (D-3), Navamsa (D-9), and others up to Dwadasamsa (D-12). Each divisional chart is calculated by subdividing every sign of the D-1 chart further, and is traditionally used to examine a specific life theme in more depth — for example, the Navamsa (D-9) is widely used for marriage and the general strength of planets, while Hora (D-2) relates to wealth.

How to Use This Chart

  • Check the planetary table: The table below the charts lists each planet's exact sign, degree, and which of the displayed charts (Lagna, Chandra, D-1) it appears in.
  • Compare Lagna and Chandra views: Reading both charts together gives a fuller picture than relying on the Lagna chart alone.
  • Use divisional charts for specific questions: Switch to the Navamsa (D-9) or other Varga charts when exploring a particular life area such as marriage or career.

All positions here are computed using sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) astronomy from your entered birth details. This tool is offered for traditional and informational reference, not as a substitute for a detailed reading from a qualified astrologer.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kundli

A Kundli is a chart of the twelve zodiac houses as they were arranged at your exact birth date, time, and place. Because the positions of the Ascendant and planets change continuously, precise birth details are needed to place them correctly in your chart.
The Lagna Chart places your Ascendant (rising sign) in the 1st house and is the standard birth chart. The Chandra Chart re-plots the same planetary positions with your Moon sign in the 1st house instead, offering an alternate, Moon-centered view used in some interpretive traditions.
These are purely visual layout conventions for drawing the same twelve houses — North Indian charts use a diamond layout with fixed house positions, South Indian charts use a fixed square grid with signs in fixed positions, and East Indian charts use a similar grid with a different starting convention. The underlying planetary data is identical across all three.
Divisional charts subdivide each sign of your main D-1 chart into smaller segments to examine specific life themes in more depth. The Navamsa (D-9) is the most widely used, traditionally referenced for marriage and for gauging the true strength of planets, while other Vargas like Hora (D-2) or Dasamsa (D-10) relate to wealth and career respectively.
Planetary positions are computed using sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) astronomical calculations based on the birth date, time, and place you provide. Accuracy of the resulting chart depends directly on how precise those entered details are — an incorrect birth time can shift the Ascendant and house placements.
Yes, the chart and planetary table generated here provide the foundational data used in most Vedic astrological analysis, including horoscope matching, career and health assessments, and Dasha (planetary period) timing. For a detailed interpretation, it is best reviewed alongside guidance from a qualified astrologer.
