About Champa Shashthi
Champa Shashthi is a sacred festival dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (also known as Skanda, Murugan, Subramanya, or Kumara), the valiant son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Observed on the Shukla Paksha Shashthi of the Margashirsha month, the festival derives its name from the Champaka flower (Michelia champaca), which is considered extremely dear to Lord Kartikeya. The bright golden-orange blossoms are offered in abundance to invoke the lord's blessings for courage, victory, and the removal of obstacles.
This day holds special significance in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, where Lord Kartikeya is worshipped as the commander of the celestial armies (Devasenapati) and the slayer of the demon Tarakasura. Champa Shashthi is also closely related to the more widely known Skanda Shashthi, though regional traditions may vary in timing and emphasis. Devotees believe that worshipping Kartikeya on this day removes Mars (Mangal) Dosha, grants success in competitive endeavors, and protects children.
The observance includes special Abhishekam with milk, honey, and fragrant waters, followed by the offering of Champaka flowers, sandalwood paste, and sweets. Devotees often undertake a partial fast, visit Subramanya temples, and chant the Skanda Sashti Kavacham or Subramanya Bhujangam. The festival underscores the themes of youthful valor, divine strategy, and the triumph of righteousness over demonic forces.

Vrat Katha: Kartikeya and the Demon Tarakasura
The demon Tarakasura had received a boon that he could only be killed by the son of Lord Shiva.
The gods, unable to defeat him, requested Goddess Parvati to marry Shiva and give birth to a divine warrior.
Lord Kartikeya was born from the sparks of Shiva's third eye and was raised by the Krittikas, the six celestial nurses.
On Shashthi, Kartikeya led the celestial armies and destroyed Tarakasura, restoring peace to the heavens and becoming the commander of the gods.
