About Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja is one of the most ancient and rigorous festivals of the Indian subcontinent, dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, and his sister Chhathi Maiya (also identified with Usha, the dawn). Observed primarily in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, and wherever the Maithili and Bhojpuri diaspora has settled, it is a four-day expression of gratitude for life, health, and prosperity.
The central ritual is the offering of Arghya—standing waist-deep in a river, pond, or other water body and presenting offerings to the setting sun on the third evening and the rising sun on the fourth morning. This unique solar worship honours the sun not only as a celestial body but as the source of all energy, healing, and cosmic order.
Both women and men undertake a strict fast, often without water (nirjala), during the final two days. The atmosphere resonates with folk songs, the aroma of freshly prepared thekua, and the sight of bamboo baskets decorated with fruits and sugarcane. It is believed that sincere observance can cure ailments, bless childless couples, and protect families from misfortune.
The festival also carries deep ecological wisdom: clean water bodies are essential for the rituals, encouraging communities to maintain ponds and rivers. It is a time when social divisions dissolve and collective devotion takes precedence.
Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules
Chhath Puja spans four disciplined days, combining purification, fasting, and the offering of Arghya to the Sun at sunset and sunrise.
- Nahay Khay (Day 1): Take a holy bath, clean the house, and eat a single meal of rice, pumpkin, and gram dal to begin purification.
- Kharna (Day 2): Observe a strict fast without water; in the evening prepare kheer with jaggery and rice, offer it to the Sun, and break the fast with this prasad and flatbread.
- Sandhya Arghya (Day 3): Prepare bamboo baskets (soop) with thekua, fruits, coconut, sugarcane, and flowers; stand in water and offer Arghya to the setting sun.
- Usha Arghya (Day 4): Return to the water before sunrise and offer Arghya to the rising sun, concluding the fast with prasad and blessings.
- Throughout the fast, maintain strict cleanliness, sleep on the floor, and avoid using metal utensils for the offerings.
- Recite Chhath Puja songs and listen to the vrata katha in the evenings to strengthen devotion.
Puja Samagri & Ritual Steps
- Bathe and wear clean, preferably new clothes.
- Arrange the offerings in bamboo baskets with raw turmeric and vermilion.

- Distribute prasad and conclude with prayers for family well-being.
Vrat Katha: The Divine Origin of Chhath Puja
According to legend, King Priyavrat and Queen Malini were childless and deeply sorrowful. With the guidance of the sage Kashyapa, they performed rigorous worship and a grand yajna to obtain a child.
A son was born to them, but he was stillborn. Heartbroken, the queen placed the infant before the sacrificial altar. At that moment, Devasena, the daughter of Brahma, appeared in a celestial form and instructed the king to worship Surya with the rituals that became Chhath Puja.
The king and queen observed the fast and offered Arghya to the Sun with unwavering faith. Pleased by their devotion, Surya granted life to their son, who grew to become a noble ruler.
Another tradition traces the origin to the Mahabharata, where Draupadi and the Pandavas performed Chhath Puja to regain their lost kingdom and prosperity. The observance is also linked to Karna, the son of Surya, who is said to have initiated solar worship.
