About Ganesh Visarjan
Ganesh Visarjan marks the grand conclusion of the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, celebrated on Anant Chaturdashi. It is the day when the lovingly installed idols of Lord Ganesha are taken in colourful processions to rivers, lakes, or the sea for immersion, symbolising the Lord's return to His celestial abode.
The immersion is not an end but a promise of return. As the idols dissolve in the water, devotees chant 'Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya' (O Lord Ganesha, come again next year), expressing both farewell and eager anticipation. The processions are accompanied by music, dance, and community feasting.
Environmentally conscious devotees now prefer clay idols and natural dyes to minimise water pollution. The festival teaches impermanence, communal harmony, and the joyful acceptance of life's cycles.
Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules
Ganesh Visarjan is observed with a final puja, a joyful procession, and the respectful immersion of the Ganesha idol in water.
- On the morning of Visarjan, perform Uttar Puja: offer fresh flowers, durva grass, modaks, coconut, and turmeric to Lord Ganesha with gratitude.
- Place the idol on a decorated palanquin or vehicle for the procession; cover the deity respectfully with a cloth.
- Accompany the idol with music, singing, and the chanting of Ganesha mantras through the streets.
- Upon reaching the water body, perform a final aarti and gently immerse the idol, facing the deity while offering flowers.
- Collect a small amount of water or clay from the immersion site to bring home as a blessing.
- Return home and share prasad with neighbours and family.
Vrat Katha: The Blessing of Ganesha's Return
Once, the sage Vamadeva requested Lord Ganesha to dwell in the homes of devotees during the waxing fortnight of Bhadrapada to remove their obstacles.
Ganesha agreed and promised to return to His divine abode, Kailasha, after ten days. The day of His departure became known as Ganesh Visarjan.
As He left, Ganesha assured His devotees that He would come again the following year. This promise is remembered in the chants sung during the immersion procession.
The immersion of the clay idol into water represents the natural return of the divine form to the elements, reminding devotees that the true Ganesha always resides in the heart.
