About Gayatri Jayanti

Gayatri Jayanti celebrates the appearance or birth anniversary of Goddess Gayatri, the divine personification of the Gayatri Mantra. It is observed on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of the Jyeshtha month, although some traditions honour it on the Shravan Purnima or other dates. The day is sacred to Brahmins and to all seekers of Vedic wisdom.

The Gayatri Mantra, revealed to the sage Vishwamitra after intense austerities, is considered the essence of the Vedas. It invokes Savitur, the divine Sun, and is believed to illuminate the intellect, remove ignorance, and bestow spiritual power. Goddess Gayatri is depicted with five heads, representing the four Vedas and the ultimate reality (Brahman).

Gayatri Jayanti is also an occasion for the renewal of the sacred thread (yajnopavita) and the reaffirmation of Vedic studies. Devotees chant the mantra, perform havan, and seek the goddess's blessings for clarity, righteousness, and inner light.

Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules

Gayatri Jayanti is observed by chanting the Gayatri Mantra, performing havan, and renewing one's commitment to Vedic living.

Step-by-Step Fasting Procedures:
  • Rise during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear freshly washed clothes; renew or adjust the sacred thread if applicable.
  • Install an image or yantra of Goddess Gayatri and decorate it with flowers and sandalwood paste.
  • Chant the Gayatri Mantra at least 108 times, preferably 1008 times, with a rosary (mala).
  • Perform a small havan with ghee and sesame while reciting the Gayatri Mantra; feed Brahmins and students.
  • Observe a fast from grains, pulses, and tamasic food; take fruits, milk, and simple satvik meals.
  • Spend the day in scriptural study, satsang, and the avoidance of anger, gossip, and idle talk.

Vrat Katha: Vishwamitra and the Revelation of the Gayatri Mantra

The sage Vishwamitra, born a kshatriya, desired the spiritual power of a Brahmarshi. He undertook severe penance in the forest, facing trials sent by the gods.

After years of austerity, divine light appeared before him in the form of Goddess Gayatri. She revealed the sacred Gayatri Mantra, the essence of the Vedas, to the sage.

Vishwamitra used this mantra to transform his consciousness and became one of the greatest rishis. He shared the mantra with humanity, making spiritual illumination available to all.

Gayatri Jayanti commemorates this gift and invites devotees to awaken the divine light within through sincere practice.
