About Kajari Teej

Kajari Teej, also known as Kajali Teej or Badi Teej, is a joyful monsoon festival celebrated mainly by women in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Haryana. It falls on the Tritiya (third day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, approximately fifteen days after Hariyali Teej. The festival marks the arrival of lush green monsoon landscapes and is deeply associated with marital love, fertility, and the well-being of the family.

The name 'Kajari' is linked to the dark monsoon clouds (Kajra) that gather in the sky during this season, symbolizing renewal and abundance. Women dress in vibrant green attire, sing traditional Kajari songs, swing on decorated jhulas (swings), and apply beautiful henna designs. The festival provides a cherished occasion for married women to visit their parental homes and receive gifts and affection from their families.

Kajari Teej also has a strong devotional aspect. Women worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, praying for a happy and enduring marriage. The rituals include fasting, Puja, and the offering of sweets and seasonal delicacies. The cultural expressions of Kajari Teej, especially its folk songs, are an important part of the intangible heritage of northern India.

Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules

Kajari Teej is celebrated with fasting, green attire, singing, swinging, and worship of Shiva-Parvati.

Step-by-Step Fasting Procedures:
  • Take an early morning bath and wear green or red traditional clothes adorned with jewelry.
  • Observe a day-long fast, consuming only fruits and milk if a complete fast is not feasible.
  • Apply mehndi (henna) on hands and feet, and decorate the home with rangoli and flowers.
  • Perform Puja of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, offering Bel leaves, flowers, sweets, and seasonal fruits.
  • Sing traditional Kajari songs and enjoy swinging on decorated jhulas with other women.
