About Kushmanda Puja

Kushmanda Puja is observed to worship Goddess Kushmanda, the fourth manifestation of Navadurga during the holy festival of Navratri. Her name is derived from the Sanskrit words 'Ku-shmanda', where 'Ku' means little, 'Ushma' means warmth or energy, and 'Anda' means cosmic egg—signifying the creator of the universe with a mere smile.

According to sacred tradition, before the creation of the universe there was only darkness and void. Goddess Kushmanda smiled, and from that divine radiance the cosmos came into existence. She is therefore venerated as Adi Shakti, the primordial source of all light, life, and cosmic energy.

Goddess Kushmanda is depicted with eight arms, holding weapons, a rosary, a lotus, a kamandalu, and other divine implements. She rides a lion and radiates the brilliance of a thousand suns. Worshipping her is believed to bestow health, vitality, strength, and the removal of diseases, especially those affecting the solar plexus and digestive system.

In regional practice, Kushmanda Puja falls on the Chaturthi day of Sharad Navratri, though devotees may also honor her during Chaitra Navratri. Her worship is particularly beneficial for those seeking courage, mental clarity, and the blossoming of creative energy in both spiritual and worldly pursuits.

Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules

Devotees observe Navratri fasting rules and perform special worship of Goddess Kushmanda on the fourth day to receive her creative and healing energies.

Step-by-Step Fasting Procedures:
  • Rise early, bathe, wear clean or new clothes, preferably in green or yellow.
  • Install the Kalash and worship it alongside the image or idol of Goddess Kushmanda.
  • Offer Malpua, a traditional sweet considered especially dear to the Goddess, as Naivedyam.
  • Chant the Kushmanda Devi mantra, Durga Saptashati, or Navadurga Stotram with full devotion.

Vrat Katha: The Smile That Created the Universe

Long before creation, the universe was enveloped in impenetrable darkness. There existed no stars, no planets, no time, and no life—only the absolute void.

From this primordial stillness, the supreme cosmic goddess Kushmanda awoke. Her body was made of pure light, and her smile was so radiant that it illuminated the entire void.

As her divine smile spread across the darkness, it transformed into a cosmic egg (Anda) from which the entire universe, including the sun, moon, galaxies, and all living beings, manifested.

Thus, Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped as the mother of the cosmos, and her devotees believe that her grace alone sustains life, health, and the luminous energy within every soul.
