About Saraswati Pujan

Saraswati Pujan, also known as Vasant Panchami or Vasanta Panchami, marks the arrival of spring and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. It falls on the Panchami (fifth day) of the Shukla Paksha in the lunar month of Magha.

On this day, devotees wear yellow—the color associated with the mustard blossoms of spring—and worship books, musical instruments, pens, and tools of learning as manifestations of Saraswati's grace. Children often begin their first lessons (Vidya-arambha), and artists seek blessings for creativity.

The festival also honors Lord Brahma, who is said to have created the universe with the help of Saraswati's wisdom. In Bengal, it is one of the most beloved days of the year, with community pandals, elaborate idols, and cultural programs.

The day is celebrated by worshipping knowledge, wearing yellow, and beginning new educational or artistic pursuits.

Vrat Katha: Brahma and the Birth of Saraswati

After creating the cosmos, Lord Brahma found that the universe lacked order and beauty. To bring knowledge, speech, and harmony into creation, he invoked the divine goddess Saraswati from his own being.

Saraswati appeared with a veena, a book, and a rosary, and her auspicious presence filled the cosmos with music, wisdom, and the sacred Vedas. Brahma then requested her to guide all beings in speech, learning, and the arts. Ever since, Vasant Panchami is celebrated as her appearance day.
