About Hartalika Teej
Hartalika Teej is a significant Hindu fasting festival observed primarily by married and unmarried women in North and Central India, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. It falls on the Tritiya (third day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, one day before Hariyali Teej. The word 'Hartalika' is derived from the words 'Harit' (abduction) and 'Aalika' (female friend), referring to the legend in which Goddess Parvati's friends took her away to the forest to help her marry Lord Shiva against her father Daksha's wishes.
The festival celebrates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and symbolizes marital bliss, devotion, and the power of a wife's prayers for her husband's longevity. Women observe a strict Nirjala fast (without food or water), dress in fine traditional attire, apply mehndi, and participate in communal singing and swinging. The atmosphere is filled with devotional songs, folk music, and the spirit of sisterhood.
Hartalika Teej holds deep spiritual significance for unmarried women as well, who observe the fast to pray for a worthy and loving husband like Lord Shiva. The rituals reinforce the values of commitment, sacrifice, and unwavering faith in the divine. In Maharashtra and some other regions, the festival is also associated with Gauri (Parvati) worship and the hope of a harmonious married life.
Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules
Hartalika Teej is observed with a strict fast, early morning bath, Shiva-Parvati Puja, and night-long vigil.
- Wake up before sunrise, take a ritual bath, and wear clean or new traditional clothes, preferably green or red.
- Observe a Nirjala fast (without food or water) from sunrise to the next morning, or consume only fruits and milk if health requires.
- Create a small idol of Goddess Parvati (Gauri) using clay or turmeric and perform her Abhishekam with water, milk, and honey.
- Worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati together, offering Bel leaves, flowers, fruits, and sweets.
- Sing Teej songs, listen to the Hartalika Teej Katha, and spend time in devotional gatherings with other women.
- Maintain a night vigil (Jagaran) if possible, and break the fast the next day after morning prayers.
Vrat Katha: The Abduction of Parvati
Goddess Parvati was determined to marry Lord Shiva, but her father, King Daksha, wanted her to marry a prince.
Her friends abducted her and took her to a dense forest, where she performed intense penance to win Shiva as her husband.
Impressed by her devotion, Lord Shiva accepted Parvati as his consort, and their divine marriage became the central theme of Hartalika Teej.
