About Valmeeki Jayanti

Valmiki Jayanti celebrates the appearance of Maharishi Valmiki, the revered sage known as the Adi Kavi (first poet) of Sanskrit literature and the author of the epic Ramayana. His life is a testament to the transformative power of the Divine Name and repentance.

Born as Ratnakara, a highway robber, he was transformed by the sage Narada, who instructed him to chant the name of Rama. Unable at first to utter "Rama," he meditated on "Mara," which itself became the Rama mantra, and after years of penance an anthill (Valmika) grew around him. Thus he became Valmiki.

The day is observed on the full moon of Ashwin month in North India, and also celebrated in Punjab and other regions with processions and recitations of the Ramayana. Devotees visit Valmiki temples, hold Shobha Yatras, and emphasize compassion, truth, and social harmony.

Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules

Devotees honor the poet-sage through scriptural study, temple worship, charity, and the chanting of Rama Nama.

Step-by-Step Fasting Procedures:
  • Rise early, bathe, and wear clean clothes, preferably saffron or white.
  • Visit a Valmiki temple or set up an altar with the image of Sage Valmiki.
  • Recite selected chapters of the Ramayana, especially the Bala Kanda and Uttara Kanda, or listen to a qualified recitation.
  • Chant the Rama mantra or the Valmiki Ashtakam.
  • Feed Brahmins, scholars, and the poor; distribute clothes and study materials as charity.

Vrat Katha: The Transformation of Ratnakara

In ancient times, a fierce robber named Ratnakara lived in the forests, robbing travelers to support his family. One day he attempted to rob the divine sage Narada, but found he could not intimidate him.

Narada asked Ratnakara whether his family would share the sin of his robberies. They refused. Shocked, Ratnakara fell at Narada's feet and begged for a way out.

Narada gave him the mantra of Rama. Since Ratnakara could not pronounce it, Narada taught him to chant "Mara" in reverse, which became "Rama." After years of meditation, an anthill covered his body. When he emerged, he was Valmiki, the enlightened sage who later composed the Ramayana.
