About Varaha Jayanti

Varaha Jayanti commemorates the appearance of Lord Varaha, the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of a divine boar. He descended to rescue Mother Earth (Bhu Devi) from the demon Hiranyaksha, who had plunged her into the cosmic ocean.

Celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Vaishakha month, this Jayanti honors the Lord who lifted the earth on his tusk and restored her to her rightful place in the universe. It is a festival of environmental and cosmic protection.

Varaha symbolizes the power of Dharma to lift creation out of chaos. Temples across India, especially those in Varaha Kshetras, hold special Abhishekam and processions, while devotees reflect on the sacred duty to protect the earth and all living beings.

Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules

Devotees worship Lord Varaha through fasting, Abhishekam, recitation, and offerings that honor Bhu Devi.

Step-by-Step Fasting Procedures:
  • Bathe early and observe a satvik fast, avoiding grains, meat, alcohol, and tamasic foods.
  • Place an image or idol of Lord Varaha lifting Bhu Devi on the altar.
  • Perform Abhishekam with Panchamrit, followed by water, honey, and sandalwood paste.
  • Offer red and yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, sesame seeds, and a sweet made from jaggery and til.
  • Recite the Varaha Stotra, Vishnu Sahasranama, and the Bhagavata Purana account of Varaha; donate food and water.

Vrat Katha: The Rescue of Bhu Devi

The demon Hiranyaksha, intoxicated by power, rolled the earth into the primordial waters and challenged the gods. The universe trembled as creation lost its foundation.

Lord Vishnu took the form of a gigantic boar, Varaha, and plunged into the cosmic ocean. With his tusks he lifted Bhu Devi from the depths.

Varaha then battled Hiranyaksha for a thousand years and finally killed him, restoring the earth to her orbit and securing the cosmic order for all beings.
