About Akshaya Navami

Akshaya Navami, also revered as Kushmanda Navami or Amla Navami, falls on the Shukla Paksha Navami of the Kartika month. The term 'Akshaya' means 'that which never diminishes', and any sacred act performed on this day is believed to yield eternal, imperishable merit. It is traditionally regarded as the day when Lord Vishnu, in His cosmic form, vanquished the demon Kushmanda and restored the stolen Vedas to Lord Brahma, re-establishing the cosmic order of knowledge and dharma.

In many North Indian households, this Navami is intimately associated with the Amla tree (Indian gooseberry), whose fruit is considered a divine residence of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Worshipping the Amla tree, donating its fruits, and consuming Amla preparations are believed to destroy diseases, wash away sins, and secure unending prosperity. The day also holds significance as an agricultural milestone, marking the ripening of Amla harvests and the expression of gratitude for nature's abundance.

Akshaya Navami is observed with great devotion by women and householders who seek health, wealth, and the welfare of their families. Special Vishnu Puja, charity to Brahmins and the needy, and the recitation of sacred texts such as the Vishnu Sahasranama form the core observances. Because of its 'Akshaya' nature, Daan (charity) given on this day is said to multiply across lifetimes.

Vrat Vidhi & Fasting Rules

The observance centers on worshipping Lord Vishnu and the Amla tree, accompanied by fasting and charity to earn imperishable merit.

Step-by-Step Fasting Procedures:
  • Rise before sunrise, take a purifying bath, and wear clean, preferably yellow or white, traditional attire.
  • Observe a partial or full fast; if fasting fully, consume only fruits, milk, and water until the evening Puja is complete.
  • Worship the Amla tree by pouring water at its roots, applying turmeric and vermilion to the trunk, and circumambulating it 108 times.
  • Perform Vishnu Puja with Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, incense, lamps, and Naivedya of sweets prepared with Amla.
  • Donate Amla fruits, blankets, food grains, and clothes to Brahmins, priests, and the poor to multiply the Akshaya merit.

Vrat Katha: The Legend of Vishnu and the Demon Kushmanda

Long ago, the powerful demon Kushmanda stole the four Vedas from Lord Brahma and hid them deep within the cosmic ocean, plunging the world into spiritual darkness and confusion.

The gods approached Lord Vishnu, who then assumed a fierce and radiant form. He dived into the ocean, battled the demon Kushmanda, and recovered the sacred Vedas.

Vishnu restored the Vedas to Brahma on the Shukla Paksha Navami of Kartika, re-establishing dharma and knowledge in the universe.

Ever since, devotees worship Vishnu on this day as the protector of the Vedas and the granter of inexhaustible merit.
